Janice and Buddy Harrelson, of Hiram, opened Bumble Bee Bakery about three years ago on Ridge Road in Dallas, and moved to a Hiram-Douglasville Highway location when they outgrew their first building about a year ago.
“The truth of it is, I was going to become an empty-nester, and really my husband is the one who instigated opening the bakery,” Janice Harrelson said.
Pauline Zotos makes most of the baked goods in the shop, but Janice makes the dry cakes, pies and tarts.
The two agreed that Harrelson’s Cola Cake was the most popular item at the bakery.
Harrelson and her team have sold 52,000 cupcakes since their opening in 2009.
The bakery also makes custom cakes and wedding cakes.
Teacups & Cupcakes opened a year ago in the historic downtown Hiram area and offers a variety of tea food and cupcakes.
“We do different cupcakes every day,” said owner and baker Carolyn Green of Hiram.
Green said some of her concoctions have included baked bean, chocolate chipotle and maple pancake with bacon cupcakes.
She comes up with the unique flavors on her own.
“We’ll try anything once,” she said.
Green does all the baking on site, building off of a pound cake base with all cupcakes.
Some of Green’s most popular cupcake flavors include red velvet, peanut butter cup and “wedding day.”
Ashley Dodd, 24, opened Cupcakery Bakery on Memorial Drive in downtown Dallas in April.
Dodd, of Dallas, has been baking with her mother, Board of Elections Supervisor Deidre Holden, for about 10 years for fun.
“I had been selling cupcakes out of my house for awhile and then when I got the opportunity to move into a building, I just took a leap of faith,” Dodd said.
Dodd bakes more than 30 different flavors of cupcakes, and customers can find out what cupcakes will be sold that day by visiting the bakery’s Facebook page.
“It’s hard to say what my specialty or favorite cupcake is to make,” Dodd said. “It’s kind of like they all have their own personality.”
