After a cup of tea in AAA and a two-year stint in AAAA, the Johns Creek Gladiators find themselves in a new classification for the third time in their short four-year history.

Grouped in with county schools Chattahoochee, Alpharetta, Centennial and four Forsyth County opponents, head coach Mike Cloy said his team is excited to get started in the state’s biggest classification while also eager to tackle a much more localized region.

“It’s going to be a really good region, good for travel, good for gates and really good for rivalries,” said Cloy, who helped start the Gladiator football program four years ago. “We’re excited as coaches and our kids are going to thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to play these local teams.”

For the past two years the Gladiators battled in 7AAAA, a region that stretched across north Georgia and included teams in Rome and Whitfield County. With just a handful of seniors in 2011 the Gladiators went 9-1 through the regular season, tied with Lambert and Chattahoochee for first place, and landed in the state playoffs for the first time in school history.

Now with a winning season under their belts and their first full senior class taking the field in the fall, Cloy is expecting big things from one of the most experienced teams in the area.

“We have a really great group of seniors that have been here and been playing together for four years. A lot of those kids have even been starting for four years so we should have a good season ahead of us.”

Skye Overton, a four-year starter in Cloy’s Power-gun offense, returns to captain an offense that averaged 32.6 points per game last season. Speedy running back Chase Solomon, a junior in his third year starting, will flank Overton in the backfield and the quarterback/running back duo will look for running lanes behind an offensive line that returns four starters.

“Our offense is pretty much intact from last year and has a lot of guys that have played a lot of varsity games together. We may not have the biggest players in this region, but we have a lot of guys that are good and work really well as a unit.”
