A year after injuries and a series of close losses sent Roswell tail spinning toward the first winless season in the school’s 62 year history, head coach Justin Sanderson has his Hornets looking for redemption in 2012.

“This year is about getting our confidence back, it’s about bringing those young kids back that played last year, seeing them grow up and playing as a cohesive unit,” said Sanderson, who took over as head coach last year after a long stint as a Roswell assistant.

“We lost plenty of heartbreakers last year but the 2012 team is undefeated right now, we have great leadership with 33 seniors and we believe that we have a very good football team.”

Included in Sanderson’s large senior class are eight returners to the offensive side of the ball — highlighted by feature back Andrew Kwateng, a three-year starter that missed much of his junior season due to injury.

The shifty senior tailback will receive a heavy work-load in Roswell’s traditional run heavy offense while looking for running room behind senior lineman Zack Adams, Kevin Austin, and tight end Bernie Arowaselu.

“We’re a little bit of dying breed as far as smash mouth football goes and we’re proud of that to be honest. We’re going to do the same things we always do at Roswell, line up in the I-formation and try to be the most physical team on the football field,” said the Roswell coach, before saying they would run the ball 60 to 65 percent of the time this fall. Senior safety Alex Brandeis will captain a defense that Sanderson said has made notable improvements already from a 2011 squad that yielded 30 or more points in seven of their 10 losses.

If all goes as planned in the coming weeks Sanderson said his team will be looking to scratch the win column early in the season this fall, starting with their season opener against cross-town rival Centennial.

“We’re really looking forward to that first game, right now it is the biggest one of the year because we know a win under out belt will go a long way towards bringing our confidence back.”
