His showing in a scrimmage with Wesleyan Friday was literally ahead of schedule.
In one half of work against the Wolves, Uter caught two touchdown passes from Kevin Johnson as part of a five-reception, 130-yard performance.
The 6-foot-3-inch, 200-pound Uter and the Knights start the real season Aug. 31 when they host Whitefield. He shone as a sophomore with 47 catches for 790 yards and eight touchdowns, but he considered himself more of a possession receiver than someone who could really stretch a secondary.
One of Uter’s touchdowns against Wesleyan went for 70 yards.
“He’s such a big body that he’s always been a great target and he’s turning into more of a vertical threat,” Pace coach Matt Hall said. “That’s a pretty dangerous weapon.”
Perhaps more foreboding for opposing defenses is that this is merely the second of three seasons that Uter and Johnson will have as a high school tandaem.
“He’s a very good route runner,” Hall said. “He uses his size well to get balls in the air. He went up to get one in traffic for about a 30-yard grab. He just knows how to use his body at the right time.”
