Hinsdale & Foster Provisions LLC is adding new flavor to the family business model.

The centerpiece of the venture, run by Sandy Springs couple Jaime and Harry Foster, is NaturAlmond, a handcrafted almond butter based on a family recipe.

The brand has steadily made a name for itself in these parts and regionally within the past several months — to the owners’ delight.

“The feedback has been phenomenal,” Jaime Foster said. “Because of the way we slow roast the almonds and grind the nuts, our almond butter simply does not compare to what is commercially available.”

Hinsdale & Foster launched its commercial kitchen in Chamblee back in March. In addition to also operating booths at the weekly Dunwoody Green and Sandy Springs farmers markets, more than 50 retailers throughout the Southeast are selling its product and multiple top local chefs are cooking with it, Foster said.

“I love talking to repeat customers and hearing about the unique ways in which they have been utilizing NaturAlmond — everything from baked goods, sauces, cheese and jam pairings, etc.” she said. “People seem to be really excited about NaturAlmond because they now have a healthy product to eat that tastes good.”

Yoforia, a premium frozen yogurt chain with stores in Georgia and North Carolina, also uses NaturAlmond to make almond butter frozen yogurt.

Perhaps more important than its success thus far is the fact that the man who started it all has given the product his personal seal of approval.

Jaime’s grandfather Jim Hinsdale began making what is now NaturAlmond in the 1970s as part of a personal initiative to change his diet and lifestyle as a means to combat a genetic predisposition to cardiovascular disease.

Using only the “highest quality” almonds — by way of California — and natural sea salt, Hinsdale fine-tuned the roasting and grinding process to his liking. Nearly four decades later, his progeny by all accounts is making the old man proud.

“We are very proud of the fact that this is a fourth generation product and hope that my great-grandchildren will eat it too,” Foster said. “At the age of 92, Grandpa Hinsdale certifies that NaturAlmond meets his quality standards for taste, texture and nutrition and is proud to have his name associated with the product. If it were not for him, we would have never had a unique product to sell.”

In addition to pushing that product, the Fosters are promoting the health benefits of its derivative nutlike seed.

Among its other attributes, almonds are a rich source of protein, fiber, Vitamin E, calcium, phosphorous and iron. They have countless cardiovascular benefits and may help to lower cholesterol in addition to helping to stabilize and control blood sugar levels, Foster noted.

Looking forward, Harry Foster espoused his company’s customer-focused approach.

“We take pride in every batch that we make; therefore, we produce in small batches to ensure freshness, quality and flavor to the consumer,” he said. “And, we plan to continue production in a peanut and gluten-free environment to accommodate those with specific allergies and sensitivities in order to accommodate as many dietary restrictions as possible.”
