The football season has officially kicked off for Chapel Hill as they were finally able to hit someone other than each other. They defeated Alexander in a scrimmage on Aug. 17.

The player that kicked the game off and put Chapel Hill on the scoreboard was cornerback Tre Owens.

“Corner Tre Owens had the play of the game,” said Geoff Pastrick, head football coach for Chapel Hill.

In the first quarter, Owens intercepted a pass by Alexander quarterback Evan Wood. Owens pulled in the pass and ran it 25 yards for the touchdown putting the first points of the game on the scoreboard.

“It was a good read by me ’cause our defense had a miscall … the pressure from my linebacker and defensive end gave me a good look to run it in,” Owens said.

Pastrick said this play made a difference in the team and allowed them to get the win.

“The play gave us a spark and started the scoring and gave us the lead 7-0. A lead our varsity would never give up,” Pastrick said.

Owens was named by his coach as one of his key returning players for the season as Owens made an impression on his new head coach during the summer workouts.

Last season, Owens had 42 tackles, four interceptions, 13 pass deflections, 11 assist tackles, 31 solo tackles and two tackles for loss.

Owens is currently being considered by several schools, including Boise State University and West Virginia University.
