Monday marks the start of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., and some Paulding County residents are gearing up for a good time as delegates.

Joseph Gullett, chairman of the Paulding County Republican Party, was elected as an alternate delegate from Georgia’s 14th Congressional District.

Gullett, of Dallas, has been a member of the Paulding County Republican Party for four years, but has never been to a national convention.

“I’m looking forward to the atmosphere,” he said. “In most conventions, there’s just a level of excitement in the air.”

Nancy Hollingshed, who was elected at the state level, attended the convention as an alternate delegate in 2004.

“I’m looking forward to it,” said Hollingshed. “We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Hollingshed said she was also excited about the political role of women this election year.

“I’m also looking forward to seeing what role women can play in this election,” she said. “In the 14th district, women make up a larger percentage of voters than men do.”

Hollingshed said she was elected because of all the volunteer work she had done for political campaigns.

“I volunteer all the time. Local candidates, party candidates — you name it, I’ve done it.”

Another Paulding resident attending the convention as a delegate is Stefan Passantino, who has served as Newt Gingrich’s campaign counsel since 1998.

Passantino is one of the three District 14 representatives.

“The reason I ran is because Newt asked me to,” Passantino said. “This is my first time going as a delegate, but I’ve been to the last three conventions in various capacities for the county.”

Passantino said the single-most important aspect of the convention is voting for the presidential nominee.

“The most important role of the delegates is to vote on who the nominee is,” Passantino said. “They also vote on platform, other rules. It’s more of an opportunity to represent Georgia and Paulding County on a more national stage.”

Passantino said he is excited about the energy of the Republican Party at the upcoming convention.

“I think it will be a really good opportunity for the party to unite behind our nominee and our vice presidential nominee,” he said. “I’m looking forward to spending some time with energized Republicans.”
