The contest, according to the commissioner, would possibly include students from the 10 schools — not counting Oglethorpe as Beardsley felt the students' age would be too much of an advantage — that are within the city limits. It would involve designing a logo for newly-incorporated Brookhaven.
The idea is to “involve some of the younger people in the community in the process of cityhood. This is just an idea to have some fun to get some community interest going,” said Beardsley.
The 10 schools identified by Beardsley to possibly participate are: Montgomery, Kittredge, Ashford Park, Woodward and Montclair elementary schools, along with Cross Keys High, DeKalb Path Academy, Marist, St. Martin’s Episcopal and Our Lady of Assumption.
“My idea is to send announcements to the principals, for each school to conduct their own contest and let each school select their own contest entrant,” he said.
The schools would then submit their entrants to the commission, who would whittle the list down to about four or five. Those finalists would be published in the media, with the final winner chosen by the newly elected mayor and city council members, after the election.
“I felt like it would engage students in awareness in the new city, the steps being taken to form it and for them to be aware of the election,” said Beardsley.
The commission is supposed to make a vote at the Sept. 20 meeting on whether or not to go forward with this contest. The meeting will be at 8 p.m. at St. Martin’s Episcopal School.
