Since before Cambridge High School opened this fall, Principal Ed Spurka has put an emphasis on the seniors of the new school taking leadership and driving the school’s new traditions. In the few months school has been in session, Spurka and the administration have noticed senior Lauren Holliger standing out in the crowd exemplifying this leadership.

Holliger said she decided to move to Cambridge from Milton High School partly to explore new leadership possibilities. So far, among her academic example of taking Advanced Placement classes to help her as she moved to college next year, she has been involved in chorus, student council and volunteers at church.

“Student council has been great,” she said. Currently, the council has been planning homecoming. Although the school has no alumni who would “come home,” the council wants to start new traditions.

“We are going to have a homecoming flag football game between staff and students,” she said of the upcoming plans. “Dr. Spurka’s really emphasized not putting discord between classes.”

Holliger said she wants to go to the University of Georgia next year, and she is already working on her academics with four AP classes this year alone. Although she’s not sure what she wants to major in, she said she wants to be prepared to find a major that she will both excel at and enjoy.

Cambridge administration said Holliger has excelled at working with the adults at the school, and she said she appreciates their input and works to ask them for advice.

“The biggest thing you have to do is be respectful of everyone’s opinion,” she said. “There’s a quote in the senior den that says ‘Respect all, fear none,’ which means be kind to everyone but don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself.”
