Against Eagle’s Landing on Sept. 21, Atkinson threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers in the Cardinals’ 45-21 road victory.
“We had better receivers and we got some great plays that we called that I know really nobody could stop and I just took advantage of that,” said Atkinson, who completed 9 of 15 passes for 195 yards.
“Mario has shown great improvement each week,” Jonesboro coach Tim Floyd said. “He has gotten a grasp of the offense which has helped his confidence to run the offense and be a leader.”
Cameron Sutton, Dereon London, Jyair Mincey and Patrick Petty all caught TD passes.
“Whoever was really working to get the ball I wanted to get the ball to,” Atkinson said. “As a quarterback, I just don’t want to look at one receiver. I want to be able to make certain reads across the field and that is what makes a better offense.”
Last Friday, Atkinson had three passing touchdowns and a rushing score in Jonesboro’s 34-20 victory over Woodland-Henry.
Off the field, Atkinson has a 3.2 GPA and an interest in journalism so one day he can become an analyst on the national level.
