Continuing a tradition 13 years in the making, the Southern Crescent Alzheimer’s Walk will be held Saturday at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater in Peachtree City.

The 3.1 mile walk, with a regional draw including Henry County, will begin at 9:30 a.m., with registration starting at 8 a.m.

There is no cost to register for the walk, but all participants are asked to consider giving a donation, said chair Sue Shaffer.

The run and walk trail starts at the amphitheater, follows along McIntosh Trail, runs through Peachtree Parkway and subdivisions, before concluding back at the amphitheater.

Other than encouraging a sense of community for those families affected by Alzheimer’s in Henry County, the run and walk is intended to be a fundraiser for resources to help those throughout the metro Atlanta area.

“There are more than 200,000 in Georgia right now with Alzheimer’s,” Sheffer said.

More than that, Shaffer said, the disease effects more than just the family members who end up becoming caretakers, but communities and businesses.

For Shaffer, however, there is a personal aspect of the event and the cause.

Shaffer’s mother-in-law died from Alzheimer’s two years ago. When she died, Sheffer made a promise to herself.

“There is such a sense of helplessness to know that there is no treatment or cure,” she said.

“It is a very expensive, long-term illness. I promised myself that when she was sick I would do something.”
