Bye weeks galore in week 7. Only seven games on the schedule and the majority of the larger schools will be taking the Friday Night off, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some intriguing matchups tonight — especially with 7AAAAA and 6A kicking off their condensed sub region schedules tonight.
Of those key sub region games, Cambridge and Northview is the only inner north Fulton matchups of the week. Both teams are winless so you know both coaches are playing up the opportunity to get the ball rolling this week.
In Class A there are a couple of huge games in 6A, the first between Pisgah and Walker and the second between King’s Ridge and Mount Paran — I’d imagine all four of those schools have visions of winning the sub region so whoever can get a leg up in week 1 will be at a huge advantage.
At the highest level Milton will try to keep the ball rolling in Region 5 in a battle of first place teams against while Roswell tries to save their season in a home tilt against Wheeler.
So let’s tee it up for another night of football. Games, previews and picks are below.
Milton (4-1) at Etowah (3-2)
Both teams are 2-0 in region 5AAAAAA and are looking like state playoff teams, so this game will go a long way towards playoff seeding.
Drawing similarities between the two schools, conveniently nicknamed the Eagles, both schools have won their two region games against Wheeler and Roswell — with Milton beating Wheeler 34-13 and Etowah knocking off Roswell 26-14 last week.
Both teams are physical and enjoy running the ball, but injuries on the Etowah front may be a huge difference maker. The Eagles from Cherokee County lost starting quarterback Reeves Johnson for the season in week 3 and backup quarterback John Oliver last week — leaving them with JV QB Robbie Knox in the second half against Roswell.
My take — Milton stays atop 5AAAAAA, moves to 3-0
Roswell (1-4) vs. Wheeler (3-2)
Two teams that are 0-2 with losses to Milton and Etowah, it’s safe to say that this game is a must-win both ways. Wheeler looked strong through three games but has really started to stumble as their schedule has gotten tougher. Roswell is looking to bounce back from a really sloppy loss to Etowah.
My take – Could go either way but I’ll take Wheeler in a nail-biter
Cambridge (0-4) vs. Northview (0-4)
Winless on both sides…but with sub region play starting this week that doesn’t really matter. The winner of this game will walk off the field tonight in first place in their region and feeling a whole lot better than they did when the week started.
My take – Titans by 14
Fellowship Christian (1-3) at Whitefield Academy (2-2)
Sub-region opener for FCS who has been a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde team so far, but with an extra week to prepare I’d assume they will put the clamps on some of their early season turnover woes. Whitefield Academy, located in Mableton, has been a strong defensive group so far — allowing just 12.5 points per game.
My take – Close early, but Whitefield pulls away late
King’s Ridge (3-1) vs. Mount Paran (0-4)
Two of the surprise stories in Class A, King’s Ridge has looked strong in all four games this season while Mount Paran, a preseason favorite in the sub region, is 0-4 and has scored just 23 points this season. The schedule has been tough for the Eagles, but for a team that has made back-to-back state playoff appearances that is quite surprising.
If King’s Ridge can get Tarez Miller rolling on offense, I like their chances in this one — and the sub region as a whole.
My take — Tigers by 10
Mount Pisgah (3-1) at Walker (4-0)
Two teams that are off to fast starts and rolling up a lot of points — but neither has played a terribly tough schedule so far so look for this sub region opener to tell you a lot about both teams. Pisgah’s offense scored 54 first half points last week against SWAC while the Wolverines were led by a heavy dose of Evan Kasian in all four of their wins.
My take — Walker scores late to win
St. Francis (1-4) vs. Cross Keys (0-4)
Coming off their first win of the season, St. Francis has a great shot to pick up victory #2 against Cross Keys to-night — a team that has struggled as much or more than any team in the state. The Indians, actually classified as a AAA school, have lost 64-0, 60-0, 60-21 and 47-7 this season.
My take — Knights by a few touchdowns
