Six local teams will be among those competing for state championships as the state volleyball tournament gets under way this week.

North Atlanta and North Springs will play in the Class AAAAA tournament, with Westminster and Lovett competing in AA and Holy Innocents’ and Atlanta International in Class A.

The top four teams from each area qualify to play in the state tournament.

First-round matches will be held today and Thursday but exact days and times for each of the matches were not set as of press time.

Each match in the first three rounds will be hosted by the higher-seeded team.

North Atlanta (16-9) earned a spot in the AAAAA tournament after finishing fourth in the Area 6AAAAA tournament last week.

The Lady Warriors will go on the road to play Allatoona, the top seed from 5AAAAA, in their first-round match.

North Springs (16-11) barely missed a top-four finish in the 7AAAAA tournament with a fifth-place showing, but the Lady Spartans were given one of the two spots that opened up since Area 1AAAAA has only two teams participating at state.

North Springs will begin AAAAA state tournament action with a first-round match at Greenbriar, the top seed from 2AAAAA and the ninth-ranked team in the state.

Westminster (25-11), the third-ranked team in Class AA, earned its spot in the AA state tournament by winning the Area 4AA regular-season title.

The Lady Wildcats, who clinched the top spot in 4AA by defeating archrival Lovett 25-23, 30-28 last Tuesday, will host Harlem, the fourth-seeded team from Area 3AA.

Joining Westminster in the AA playoffs will be Lovett (17-13), the fourth-ranked team in AA and the No. 2 seed from 4AA.

The Lady Lions will host Laney, the third seed from 3AA, in a first-round match.

Holy Innocents’ (16-17) enters the Class A state tournament on a roll after winning the Area 5A tournament on its home court last week.

The Lady Golden Bears, ranked 10th in Class A, defeated Atlanta International 25-11, 29-27, 25-12 in the championship match last Thursday to claim the 5A title and earn the No. 1 seed from that area.

Holy Innocents’ will open state tournament play at home against Lakeview Academy, the fourth seed from 6A.

As the runner-up in the 5A tournament, Atlanta International (26-7) will be the second seed in that area.

The Lady Eagles — the ninth-ranked team in Class A — will host Prince Avenue Christian, the third seed from 6A in a first-round match.

“I’m very proud of the team and their accomplishments this season and look forward to hosting [a first-round state tournament game] for the second year in a row,” Atlanta International coach Gregg Albright said. “The school and students are always so supportive and will come out to cheer loudly for our team.”

Also making it to the state tournament is Marist (19-10), which earned its spot by winning the Area 5AAAA tournament.

As the top seed from 5AAAA, the Lady War Eagles — also the third-ranked team in Class AAAA — will host Cass, the fourth seed from 6AAAA, in a first-round AAAA tournament match.

Blessed Trinity (50-2), Woodward (37-13) and St. Pius X (39-17-1) — the top three teams in Class AAA, respectively — will be playing in the AAA tournament.

Blessed Trinity is the top seed from 5AAA and will host North Oconee, the fourth seed from 6AAA, while Woodward, the No. 1 team from 5AAA, hosts Johnson, Savannah, the fourth seed from 1AAA, and St. Pius X, the second seed from 5AAA, hosts Morgan County, the third seed from 6AAA.
