The Mundy’s Mill junior running back has rushed for a total of 606 yards and six touchdowns in recent sub-region victories against Mt. Zion and Drew.
“Rodney has been solid every game we have played this year,” Mundy’s Mill football coach Greg Manior said. “The last two games he has just taken over and led the team. He’s just been phenomenal these last two weeks.”
In the Tigers’ first win of the season, Smith ran for 320 yards and two touchdowns during a 31-12 victory against Mt. Zion on Oct. 5.
“The line was doing an amazing job,” said Smith, who had rushing scores from 40 and 20 yards. “Both touchdowns I went untouched — all credit to the line.”
Then in a 32-31 triumph against Drew last Friday, Smith ran for 286 yards, including touchdown runs of 56, 54, 29 and 26 yards.
As a result, the Tigers are tied for first place in sub-region 4A-AAAAA with a 2-0 record.
“The kids deserve it,” Manior said. “We had a hard first four games.”
Off the field, Smith has a 3.0 GPA and an interest in endocrinology.
