Westmister (26-11) got the state tournament off to a strong start as it beat Harlem in three straight sets in their first-round best-of-five set Class AA match on Wednesday at Turner Gym.
The Lady Wildcats won the first set 25-2, then took the next two sets 25-6 and 25-4 to secure the win and advance to a second-round match with Early County on Tuesday.
“The team stepped onto the court with a clearly focused mindset and connected hearts to play our game one point at a time with no distractions and keeping unforced errors to a minimum,” Westminster coach Jona Braden said. “We were taking care of our side of the net and winning every touch. I felt good about our overall performance.”
Lovett (18-13) was equally impressive in its first-round AA match as it defeated Laney in three games on Wednesday.
The Lady Lions jumped out with a 25-4 win in the opening set, then proceeded to win the second set 25-7 and the third 25-10 to close out the match and move on to the second round, where they went on the road to play Calhoun on Tuesday.
Holy Innocents’ (17-17) completed a three-set sweep of Lakeview Academy in its first-round match last Thursday/
The Lady Golden Bears won took the opening set 25-18 and squeaked out a 25-23 win in the second set before closing things out with a 25-14 victory in the final stanza.
With the win, Holy Innocents’ advanced to a second-round matchup with North Cobb Christian at home on Tuesday.
It took four sets for Atlanta International (27-7) to secure its win over Prince Avenue Christian at home last Thursday.
The Lady Eagles won the first set 25-16, then lost the second set 25-21 before sweeping the last two 25-15 and 25-8 to advance to Tuesday’s second-round match on the road against Landmark Christian.
“The team played a solid match against Prince Avenue Christian,” Atlanta International coach Gregg Albright said. “We hit our stride in game three and finished strong.”
Meanwhile, the season came to an end in round one for both North Springs and North Atlanta in the Class AAAAA tournament.
North Springs lost to Greenbrier 25-21, 25-19, 29-27, while North Atlanta also fell to Allatoona in three sets.
Marist defeated Cass 25-8, 25-4, 25-2 in its first-round AAAA match, while Blessed Trinity won over North Oconee 25-14, 25-7, 25-8, St. Pius X beat Morgan County 25-11, 25-16, 25-4 and Woodward beat Johnson, Savannah 25-7, 25-6, 25-6 in AAA action.
Marist will host Mary Persons, while St. Pius X hosts Ringgold and Blessed Trinity hosts Cartersville in second-round matches.
