A schematic design for the city hall building and parking deck components of the Alpharetta City Center project has been approved by City Council, marking another milestone in the plan’s development.

Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle said he is excited that the project is on schedule to be completed July 2014.

Michael Swartz, the project’s architect, presented the layout of the new city hall building, which will be 47,095 square feet and four stories.

“We’re really happy with how the building lays out,” he said.

Swartz said the building’s design has been tweaked over the past few weeks.

“A lot of good things came out of that,” he said. “We reduced the footprint of the building by about five percent … without affecting the functionality of the building whatsoever.”

Swartz said the color of the bricks for the city hall and 450-space parking deck has yet to be decided.

Councilman Chris Owens said he believes the design team, the public and city officials have all worked well in the process of developing the City Center.

“There’s still a lot of work left to do,” he said. “It’s an exciting process and we’re just one or two more steps farther down the road.”

Council members voted 7-0 to approve the schematic design and will continue to have City Center updates at each city council meeting.

“It’s starting to come together,” said Belle Isle. “We’re starting to see the depth of the project itself.”
