A vote from the Johns Creek city council Monday night approved the plans for The Kroger Company to move forward with a fuel center at their Rivermont store at the intersection of Barnwell Road and Holcomb Bridge Road.

The store will add a 7 bay fuel center, which will match the design of the Kroger store itself.

Justin Kirouac, the city’s planning and zoning administrator, said the staff recommended approval with conditions.

In addition to the new fuel center, Kroger asked for the height limit for their signs to be changed from 6 feet to 7 feet so their fuel prices could be seen from the road.

“One of the biggest components of operating a fuel center is advertising your price,” said Kroger representative Rob Samford. “People are very price-sensitive in where they buy their gas and the additional foot, we believe, will allow our pricing to be visible to the traffic going both directions on Holcomb Bridge Road above the existing landscape.”

While plans for new fuel centers have garnered negative attention in the past, David Kornbluh with the Johns Creek Community Association said this particular plan has not met much community opposition and the association overall supports the fuel center.

“The only concern we’ve heard about essentially boils down to the access around Barnwell,” he said. “We’ve had discussions and supposedly that’s being worked on offline — I haven’t gotten any feedback on that — but that was the main concern that was raised by residents.”

Other than the traffic on Barnwell, Kornbluh said the discussions have been fairly quiet and generally in support of the changes.
