In talks with a representative from the governor’s office, north Fulton mayors pitched a transportation solution involving several counties and a central regional transit group.

“I think that probably some still feel that we need a regional transportation plan,” said Sandy Springs Mayor Eva Galambos. “Just because the other one failed means we need to stop working in that direction.”

Galambos said one of the flaws with the regional idea presented by the T-SPLOST was that it spanned 10 counties and a regional plan for metro Atlanta should consist of the 5 inner counties, several of which already have bus infrastructure.

“Cobb has buses. Gwinnett has buses. Clayton has buses,” Galambos said. “Those three and Fulton and DeKalb, that needs to be the regional agency.”

Roswell Mayor Jere Wood said a regional transit agency would not take as much money as other projects the governor’s office is looking at.

“Going to a regional transit agency, it will take time and transition to get there, but it’s actually going to cost less,” he said. “Creating a regional transit agency creates efficiencies and costs less than what we’re currently paying.”

Wood said the first step is to present a stable and feasible plan to the public in order to gain trust, especially before questions of how the plan would be funded could be answered.

“I want to focus on something that doesn’t cost money, create a model in which the people have confidence in and then go back and request for more funding,” he said. “I wouldn’t put a request for more money on the table until we get the house in order.”
