Blessed Trinity used 306 rushing yards and 24 third quarter points to run away from McNair on Thursday night, winning 38-6 and remaining perfect in 6AAA play.
Spencer McManes threw three touchdowns in the game, two going to Sam Roberts, and Carter McManes added two touchdowns on the ground to lead the way.
The win sets up Blessed Trinity, ranked No. 8 in the state coming into the week, for a huge game next week against St. Pius X, ranked fifth in the state.
“They are one of the best teams in the state, really good and well coached. We know we cant play like we did tonight and have a chance next week,” said Blessed Trinity head coach Tim McFarlin after the game. “I don’t know that it was looking ahead or what, but we came out flat in the first half and didn’t really play the type of football we have been.”
Blessed Trinity (7-1 overall, 4-0 in 6AAA) jumped on top 14-0 with a pair of quick touchdown drives in the first quarter — the first ending on a 3-yard plunge by Carter McManes and the second on a 15-yard pass from Spencer McManes to Roberts.
The Titan defense forced McNair (3-5, 0-4) to turn the ball over on downs on both of their second quarter possessions, but the BT offense couldn’t capitalize either time, sending the game to halftime 14-0.
“It was a tale of two halves in some ways and to our kids credit, we had a nice little discussion at halftime and came out in the third quarter and really played better and put the game away,” said McFarlin.
Out of the locker room at halftime, the Titan defense continued their strong work by forcing McNair into four straight three-and-outs in the third quarter.
The BT offense responded this time, stringing together three straight touchdown drives of three plays or less to jump out to a 35-0 lead.
Timmy Mertz highlighted the first drive with a 59-yard run up the sideline before Carter McManes bulldozed in from seven yards out. A 53-yard John Davis punt return set up a 9-yard touchdown pass to Roberts on the second drive and a 25-yard scamper by Casey Bradley set up McManes final touchdown pass of the game on the third drive — a 1-yard pass to Chris Romero.
Mertz finished the game with a team-high 78 yards on nine carries, Carter McManes added 58 yards on seven carries and Roberts had 81 all-purpose yards to lead the Titans.
Marc Nolan, who was a perfect 5-for-5 on extra points, added a 31-yard field goal late in the third quarter.
McNair scored a late touchdown before a running clock brought the game to a 38-6 final.
