Westminster and Lovett are headed to the state volleyball semifinals, while Holy Innocents’ and Atlanta International saw their seasons come to an end in second- and third-round action last week.

Westminster (28-11) defeated Early County 25-4, 25-10, 25-8 in the second round of the Class AA tournament last Tuesday and then automatically qualified for the semifinals after being awarded the second seed in AA after a GHSA reseeding meeting last Wednesday.

The Lady Wildcats will play Greater Atlanta Christian at Wesleyan on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

It will be the first state semifinal appearance for Westminster since 2009, when it finished runner-up in the AA/A tournament. The Wildcats have made it to the quarterfinals the last two years.

“It is never about what we have done in the past. It is always about what we are doing in the present,” Westminster coach Jona Braden said. “Every season we step onto the court with every intention of making improvements individually and collectively, competing against the best of the best and to be playing our best volleyball at the end of the season.”

Lovett (20-13) will be traveling to Wesleyan for the AA semifinals as well after defeating Calhoun 25-16, 25-14, 25-7 in the second round last Tuesday and St. Vincent’s 25-8, 25-9, 25-16 in the quarterfinals last Saturday.

The Lady Lions will play top-ranked Wesleyan on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the AA semifinals.

It will be the second trip to the state semifinals in three years for Lovett, which advanced to the semis in 2010 and lost in the first round last year.

“[Making it to the state semifinals is] only one of our goals and especially for our senior captain, Maggie Sinkler, who the last time we were at the final four, she was a first-year player on the varsity team as a sophomore,” said Lovett coach Mary Buczek. “So, it’s really exciting for her and for the whole team and program.”

Holy Innocents’ (18-18) was able to advance to the Class A quarterfinals as it defeated North Cobb Christian 27-25, 25-22, 25-20 in the first round last Tuesday.

The Lady Golden Bears’ run came to an end in the quarterfinals, however, as they lost to Savannah Christian 25-21, 22-25, 21-25, 26-24, 15-12.

Atlanta International’s state title quest concluded one round earlier than Holy Innocents’.

The Lady Eagles (27-8) lost to Landmark Christian, the top-ranked team in Class A, 25-23, 25-23, 25-14 in their second-round match.

Marist (23-10) moved on to the Class AAAA state semifinals after defeating Mary Persons 25-9, 25-8, 25-12 in the second round last Tuesday and beating River Ridge 25-21, 25-19, 25-21 in the quarterfinals last Saturday.

The Lady War Eagles will host Columbus in their AAAA semifinal match on Wednesday.

Blessed Trinity (52-2) and Woodward (40-13) received automatic berths in the Class AAA state semifinals after winning their second-round matches last Tuesday and receiving quarterfinal byes when they were seeded first and second, respectively, in AAA at the reseeding meeting.

Blessed Trinity defeated Cartersville 25-11, 25-14, 25-23, while Woodward beat North Murray 25-8, 25-7, 25-8.

St. Pius X (42-17-1) also earned a spot in the AAA semifinals after beating Ringgold 25-7, 25-12, 25-18 in the second round last Tuesday and Sonoraville 25-18, 25-9, 25-21 last Saturday.
