Warner Ray has set the pace for the Holy Innocents’ boys’ cross country team the last three years.

Ray has also been busy re-writing the Golden Bears’ cross country record book as well. The junior ran a time of 16 minutes, 19 seconds Oct. 13 at the Asics Invitational AT McIntosh Nature Preserve in Whitesburg, breaking the school record of 16:25 that he set as a freshman two years earlier.

It was the latest of an impressive string of performances for Ray, who finished third with a time of 16:47 at the Darlington Cross Country Festival in Rome Sept. 29 and ran 16:49 to place fifth at the First Presbyterian Day-Warner Robins Wild Run meet in Macon Sept. 22.

“Warner is a rare talent combined with a remarkable work ethic,” Holy Innocents’ boys cross country coach Dunn Neugebauer said. “Nobody on the team works harder and the results are still speaking for themselves.”

Ray is setting his sights on contending once again for the Class A state boys’ cross country individual title after finishing ninth (16:55) last year and eighth (16:41) two years ago at the state meet in Carrollton. He is also a state contender in track and field, finishing fifth in the 3,200-meter run at the state meet last spring. Additionally, Ray makes his mark in other areas at Holy Innocents’ as president of the junior class as well as being involved with the school’s Integrity Council, Student Diversity Leadership Council and the Captain’s Council.
