Overmatched by a bigger and more experienced team, Cambridge couldn’t play the role of spoiler against Sequoyah Friday night, falling to the Chiefs 42-0 at Skip Pope Stadium.

“Our kids played hard tonight and really they have played hard all year,” said Cambridge head coach Craig Bennett after the game. “We came out with a lot of energy early in the game, but it’s just hard for us to sustain that right now as a team and we got worn down as the game moved along.”

The Bears took their shots at Sequoyah early, controlling the ball and the clock for nearly the entire first quarter. Running backs JD White and Ryan Callahan provided sparks to the running game as Cambridge threatened deep in Chief territory on both of their first two drives.

But a fourth down pass fell incomplete on the opening drive and a holding penalty negated a White run that pushed inside the 10 on the second drive.

As Cambridge let opportunities slip through their finger tips, Sequoyah made the most of theirs — scoring touchdowns on each of their first three possessions. Stuart Glassic ran the first in from 38 yards out and Blake Ingleton scored twice in the second quarter — first on a 2-yard run and later on a 60-yard screen pass.

Ingleton — who entered the night as the leading rusher in Class AAAAA and the second leading rusher in the state — proved to be a tough man for Cambridge to stop all night lost. The senior back ran for 230 yards and scored four touchdowns on the game, pushing his season total to 1,917 yards.

He added two more second half touchdown runs before the clock struck zeros on a 42-0 final.

Cambridge’s only other scoring opportunity was negated by an illegal shift penalty in the second quarter, wiping out a beautifully thrown 30-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Little to Jordan Sloter.

The loss also ends sub-region play for Cambridge (1-8 overall, 1-4 in 7AAAAA-North). The Bears finished the year in fifth place of six teams in their inaugural season of varsity football and will play a region play-off game next Friday against the No. 5 seed from 7AAAAA-South, Osborne.

Cambridge tangled with the Cardinals earlier in the season and threw a scare into the Cobb County school, hanging tight until the fourth quarter when Osborne pulled away and won 20-0.

“We’re continuing to work hard and progress as a team, and as coaches that is all we can really ask of our kids,” said Bennett. “I think we are a whole lot better that we were when we played them early in the year, we’ve worked hard and gotten better and I think our kids will be looking for a little redemption against them next week.”
