On Nov. 3, Long finished second behind her freshman teammate Kathryn Foreman with a time of 18:40 in the Class A state finals.
“I was really just trying to give it all I had because I had an injury earlier in the season,” Long said. “It took a lot for me to overcome that and really just trusting the Lord and myself that I could get through the injury and everything so I could do the best I could at state.”
“She went out as hard as she could,” Landmark cross country coach Bill Thorn said. “She was determined to win it again. She didn’t hold anything back.”
Long was also appreciative of the motivation and inspiration that Thorn and Foreman provided.
After participating in the distance events in track and graduating, Long, who has a 3.9 grade-point average, would like to also run for the Air Force Academy while learning to be a pilot.
“I’ve just always wanted to fly,” she said. “Two of my siblings went to flight school.”
