Last week: 6-0 (21-5 overall)
Coosa (4-6) at Lovett (6-4)
When/Where: Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Conley-Oakley Field
Last time they met: Lovett won 14-7 in the state semifinals on Dec. 4, 1964 in their only other game.
Scouting the matchup: With four straight wins and coming off its dramatic 31-30 victory over Greater Atlanta Christian to clinch the Region 6AA title, Lovett enters the game with plenty of momentum. The Lions have demonstrated considerable reslience in the past three games, coming from behind to beat Wesleyan, Westminster and GAC. Lovett will play a Coosa team that has some momentum going as well, having won four of its last five games after losing its first five of the season. With a number of dangerous playmakers on offense and a solid defense, the Lions should come away with the first-round win.
Westminster (4-6) at Pepperell (6-4)
When/Where: Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Dragon Stadium, Lindale
Last time they met: This is their first meeting.
Scouting the matchup: Westminster will have to go on the road for its first-round game with Pepperell. The Wildcats have won their first-round game the last five years in a row, though they went on to lose their second-round contest each time. Westminster faces a Pepperell squad that is on a roll with six wins in their last seven games after starting out the season 0-3. The Dragons will definitely be the biggest team the Wildcats have faced, with a formidable offensive line led by 6-4, 320-pound LSU commitment Andy Dodd. However, Westminster has been battle tested by its tough regular-season schedule and that might make the difference.
