According to Cartersville Police, Brett Robert Burke, 22, was arrested Monday and has been charged with aggravated sodomy, aggravated child molestation, and interference with child custody.
Further charges may be filed depending upon the outcome of the investigation a news release stated.
Burke was arrested in connection with the disappearance of a 12-year-old female from Louisiana, who was listed as a runaway by local law enforcement officials in Louisiana.
The juvenile had been missing since late Saturday night or early Sunday morning and Cartersville Police Chief Thomas Culpepper said an investigation by Louisiana authorities led to the belief that the two were in the Cartersville area.
Burke and the juvenile had allegedly met via the Internet and according to police Burke traveled to Louisiana and brought the child back to Cartersville, where he was reportedly staying with friends.
Burke is being transferred to the custody of the Bartow County jail. The investigation is ongoing.
“We are extremely pleased that this young girl was located as quickly as she was,” Culpepper said. “The longer a person is missing, the less likely it is that law enforcement will locate the individual. Our officers did a great job in resolving this situation.”
