The DeKalb County Board of Registration and Elections saw a low turnout of voters today as residents cast their ballots for the city’s first mayor and three city council positions.
As of 7 p.m., 4,996 ballots had been cast, said Mary Frances Weeks, administrative assistant with the elections office. There were 28,561 voters registered for the election.
“It’s been a very quiet day,” she said.
Weeks added the preliminary voter turnout numbers only account for the totals the 12 precincts call in throughout the day. The polling site at Montgomery Elementary School reported the greatest turnout with 970 voters, she said. The precinct at St. Martin in the Field Episcopal Church on Ashford Dunwoody Road had the second highest turnout with 779 voters.
Early voting for the Brookhaven elections also showed low numbers of voters. Elections director H. Maxine Daniels said only 62 voted in person during the early voting period last week. Out of the 760 absentee ballots mailed out, only 363 had been returned to the elections office by 4 p.m. Monday, Daniels said.
