Competing every week since Nov. 14, the team has seen lots of success, but they have had their struggles.
“[The season] is going well, but we have had some tough duals,” said head coach Sean Moistner.
On Nov. 17, the Cougars won four of their five matches at home, losing only to Collins Hill, 37-35. However, on the next match, on Nov. 21, they had slightly different results as Alexander fell to three of five teams.
“As a wrestling coach, the hardest part is that you can’t really do anything. You can watch and see what’s happening and what they should do, but you can’t do anything to help,” Moistner said.
In the recent Southern Slam in Greenville, S.C., the Cougars finished 15th out of 40 teams, with Deandre Sims and Cody Dickerson finishing as tournament placers, second and fourth respectively.
Sims and Dickerson are two of the three wrestlers Moistner named as his top performers, with Cody Starnes being the third. All three are seniors this year.
Sims is 182 pounds and a captain for Alexander who has been wrestling since he was a freshman. Dickerson weighs in at 152 pounds and has been wrestling for six years, beginning in the youth program. Starnes is in his third year of wrestling and comes in at 126 pounds.
Sims and Dickerson return this season after third place finishes at the state meet last year.
Another top competitor for the Cougars is sophomore Roman Boylen. He is also a team captain and won the region and state championship last year. Boylen is currently recovering from an injury, but Moistner said he will be back in action over the Christmas break.
Moistner has been coaching wrestling at Alexander for nine years and said “it has been fun watching them develop as wrestlers and people.”
Over the years, the Cougars have seen much success as they won the region and state championship in 2010. They have also had an individual region or state champion every year since 2000 and have been the county champions every year since 1990 — except 2005 when the team did not participate.
As the season continues and Alexander works toward the region meet, Moistner is confident in his team’s ability to pull out a victory in their competitions along the way.
“If the kids continue to work as hard as they have been and if we wrestle to our ability, we should win, no question,” Moistner said.
