According to Clayton County Police Community Affairs Commander, Lt. Chris Windley, Callahan and other officers responded to a disturbance call at the Stockbridge location around 2:17 p.m. Monday.
Upon arrival, the officers confronted a white male and female in reference to the disturbance.
The male subject began fighting with the officers, was able to break free of them and then ran around the building, Windley said.
At that point, he emerged from around the building and began firing at the officers.
“The officers returned the fire, fatally wounding the suspect,” Windley said.
However, during the exchange of gunfire, Callahan was wounded.
Medical personnel responded in assisting the officer as he was transported to a local hospital in critical condition before succumbing to his injuries this morning.
Windley added that Clayton County Police Chief Gregory Porter was meeting with Officer Callahan’s family this morning.
No additional information has been released regarding this incident.
The case is under investigation with the Clayton County District Attorney’s office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Windley said.
The deceased suspect’s name is not being released.
“We are asking for prayers for the Callahan family, the Clayton County Police Department family and our community as we endue the loss of a fallen officer,” Windley said.
He added that being a police officer is a job only a few people have the mental and physical ability to perform.
“For those men and women who do have those abilities, it is an honor to put on the uniform,” Windley said.
“Our job as police officers is to protect and serve and our job requires us to run to face the danger, no matter what the circumstances,” he added.
“We don’t do this job to be seen, we do this job to protect our nation because it is something we love to do,” Windley said.
“Officer Callahan joined the Clayton County Police Department because he wanted to do something he loved,” he added.
