Joshua Milam and the Riverdale Raiders are making it hard for opponents to put them away by large margins.

Against Westlake on Dec. 11, Milam scored 12 of his 20 points after halftime as the Raiders overcame a double-digit deficit to only fall short 77-71.

“Josh played his heart out tonight,” Riverdale boys’ coach Tony Brinson said. “He played a big-time game.”

In their other four losses, the Raiders fell to Westlake by four the first time, Mt. Zion by one, Eagle’s Landing by six and North Clayton by seven in overtime.

“Every game we’ve lost has been tight,” Milam said. “We just need to work on finishing.”

“We’re hanging in there to the buzzer,” Brinson said. “By playing games this early against top-ranked teams it is going to help us come region play.”

The 6-foot-2 Milam feels he has accomplished one of his personal goals of reducing his turnovers compared to last season and hopes the team can reach its goal. “I have never played in a state playoff game,” Milam said. “I want to know how that feels so this year we are just pushing each other to make it to state and be a competitive team.”
