Taste Decatur

Under new ownership, Taste Decatur continues to provide specialty items for those proficient in the kitchen. Marcy Cowan took over the 8-year-old space in May and commented on the local items spread throughout the store.

The store features a multitude of kitchen essentials such as baking items, kitchen décor, aprons, a variety of utensils, oil and vinegar dispensers and more.

Also on the shelves are a number of locally produced food items like a line of Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q, homemade chow chow, jams, honey and imported foods.

After being a lawyer for 35 years, Cowan decided to take her life in a new direction and hone in on her kitchen skills.

While the history of the store tends to draw customers in to the store, Cowan also makes sure to host several events throughout the year to help gauge interest. She recently had a cookbook signing with Nathalie Dupree, as well as several tasting demonstrations with local food producers.

“We strive to have unique cookware and bakeware items,” said Cowan.

Items in the store are reasonably priced, with choices for any person. Ready-made gift baskets are available.

Store hours are Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. — with extended holiday hours. Taste Decatur is at 416 Church St. in Decatur.

Having been open six years, Heliotrope can be summed up in offering anything to everyone. The shop is full of such favorites as the local Decatur-themed coasters, Gurgle pots, napkins, an assortment of candles, purses, jewelry, dinner table topic games, home décor items and more.

Brothers Tommy Barker and Mike Reynolds are the owners of the store, and Reynolds commented on how they are able to offer customers a variety of items. Prices range anywhere from $5 to $500, he said.

Also, for the holiday season, Heliotrope has in stock several Christmas tree ornaments, items with holiday flair such as napkins, candles and candleholders, décor and more.

Shoppers looking for gifts for the younger ones, a section in the back of the store is dedicated to children with lunchboxes, backpacks, games and more.

For those who may prefer the shopping from home experience, they will revel in the online store offered for Heliotrope.

Store hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Heliotrope is at 248 W. Ponce de Leon Ave. in Decatur.

Alexia Gallery

Just through the threshold of its doors, visitors to Alexia Gallery are greeted with a wide variety of handcrafted jewelry, pottery and glasswork.

The brainchild of Corinne Herbst, the store carries only the finest quality of products, according to Corinne’s husband Arthur.

He added the store has been in Decatur for seven years, with his wife being in the handcrafted jewelry business for 30 years — the bulk of that time in Georgia.

“We have about 712 artisans from around the world,” said Herbst. “We constantly get in items, that’s one of the nice things about the store. It doesn’t get dull.”

In addition to work from Cunningham Pottery, Hilborn pottery and a multitude of jewelry artists — Corinne has quite a few pieces she has made on display including rings, bracelets and necklaces.

One of the reasons the store has been successful is his wife’s contact with the customers, said Herbst.

“When she talks with customers, she spends time with them and doesn’t whisk them out,” he said. “She has a sense of building a relationship.”

Customers can find a range of prices for every pocket, with differing from $50 to $10,000. Gift wrapping is available in-store.

Store hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed Sunday and Monday. Alexia Gallery is at 335 W. Ponce de Leon Ave., Suite B in Decatur.
