First-year school New Manchester’s 4x100 squad finished as Class AAAA state runner-ups, finishing with a time of 47.98 seconds which was .08 of a second behind champion Redan.
This particular year-end review will feature a story of a basketball team with the best record in the county, a new school running to make themselves known and a youth team that won it all.
TIGERS TOUGH
“23-1 Tigers gear up for championship round” from early February.
The Douglas County Tigers wrapped up a stellar regular season with wins over region foes Pope and Chapel Hill. These two wins put the Tigers at a 14-0 region record and 23-1 overall, as they clinched the No. 1 overall seed for the 5-AAAA tournament.
Douglas County made it through the region tournament and to the second round of the state playoffs. This was the Tigers’ first time back to the state tournament since making it to the state finals in 2006.

“New Manchester track excels in first season” from May explained some accomplishments of the inaugural track season for the then-new school.
New Manchester was in its first year of operation, and its sports teams spent this year trying to establish themselves among long-standing programs in its county, region and state. The girls’ track and field relay squad didn’t mess around in its inaugural campaign.
The squad consisted of two freshmen and two sophomores, led by head track coach Justin DeShon. In the Class AAAA state championship, the 4x100 squad finished as runner-ups, finishing with a time of 47.98 seconds, just .08 seconds behind champion Redan. Two weeks prior to the state meet, the quartet won the Region 5-AAAA championship with a 48.24 and the West sectional with a 48.14.
SERIES CHAMPS
“Youth travel team wins regional World Series” took a look at a young group of boys that traveled to Florida for a youth championship in the summer.
The Douglas County Bulls won the 2012 United States Specialty Sports Association World Series in Panama City, Fla., in July, besting teams from Florida, Alabama and Texas.
This group of young boys, mainly from Douglas County, practiced and participated in tournaments year round on their travel ball team, led by head coach Bobby Fail. Going into the World Series the Bulls were ranked No. 1 in Georgia. Two of Fail’s players were given MVP titles, offensive and overall.
