Kyle Simmons rose to the occasion when his Druid Hills football team needed him most this past season.

The senior stepped up to fill the Red Devils’ vacancy at quarterback, performing admirably and was a steady presence in that role.

“It just goes to show you what kind of a young man he is,” said Druid Hills coach Kip Hall. “Most folks would be concerned about it ruining their [college recruiting] chances, but Kyle was selfless enough to do it … and he played well for us.”

Simmons, the throwing quarterback in the Red Devils’ wildcat scheme, connected on 85 of 138 pass attempts — good for a 61.6 completion rate — for 1,039 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The senior signal caller was among several bright spots in the team’s 2012 season. Druid Hills had 11 players receive All-Region honors.

Simmons was a key driving force in this banner season, his taking on such a huge responsibility with no qualms a good example of a player not putting himself before the team. His sacrifices aside, expect more good things out of him on the gridiron.

Said Hall: “Every coach wants players like Kyle … we were fortunate enough to have him on our side.”
