Nevertheless, the Lady Cougars have held their own so far with a 3-4 overall record and 2-0 mark in Region 1AAA as of Thursday.
“After losing six seniors, we have exceeded expectations,” Holy Spirit Prep coach Jada Jordan said.
There have been no winning or losing streaks of any kind for the Lady Cougars, who lost to Monsignor Donovan Catholic 37-29 in their season opener Nov. 17, defeated Grace Baptist Christian 64-18 Nov. 27, fell to Mount de Sales 46-29 Nov. 30, beat crosstown rival Weber 38-26 Dec. 6, were defeated by Crown 68-62 Dec. 7 and won over Loganville Christian 33-30 Dec. 11.
“We have been competitive in most of our games, with the exception of Mount de Sales,” Jordan said.
Holy Spirit’s last game of 2012 was a memorable one as it lost to Piedmont 55-50 in three overtimes at the Monsignor Donovan Catholic tournament in Athens Dec. 22.
The Lady Cougars are still smarting from last year’s 48-34 loss to Atlanta Girls’ School in the finals of the 1AAA tournament – a game in which they held a 10-4 lead at one point.
“That loss lit a fire under our girls,” Jordan said. “It has been a big motivating factor for us and the girls want to get back to the region finals this year and make up for it.”
With most of its graduation losses coming from the frontcourt, Holy Spirit Prep finds itself stronger in the backcourt this season.
“Our strength is in our guard play,” Jordan said. “We lost two or three players in the post position, so we don’t have as much experience there. But, our guards have been unstoppable.”
Point guard Aimee Sinks has teamed up with fellow junior Selina Kelete in the Holy Spirit backcourt, while senior forward/center Emily Browning has provided a steady presence in the frontcourt.
The Lady Cougars are looking to contend once again in 1AAA, with Atlanta Girls’ School, Heritage and Loganville Christian among the other top contenders
