Kindred Spirit, an Atlanta-based Christian residential facility for pregnant teenagers, has brought its Frosty Fun 5K back to Brookhaven for the second year.

The race, which will take place Jan. 26 at 9 a.m., is a fundraiser to help the nonprofit support programs for pregnant teens and cover operational costs, said Kindred Spirit founder and President Carol Covington. “It’s a wonderful way, in the Brookhaven community, to give back,” she said. “It’s a race with a mission.”

Last year, more than 300 runners participated in the race, and the event raised about $35,000, said Claire Holley, one of the race organizers and a member on the nonprofit’s board of directors.

“This year, we’re hoping to double all of that,” she added. Covington explained the funding to operate the nonprofit comes mainly from private donations and fundraisers like this one. The facility currently houses three teens and expenses run about $3,000 to $4,000 a month per girl. She added most of the teens come to the facility from foster care systems and are in great need of support.

Holley explained they came up with the idea to have a 5K last year, because they wanted to choose a fundraiser that would encompass a large range of participants. She said the event appeals to all ages and those of all skill levels.

“It’s definitely a race for serious runners and a fun run/walk for families,” she said. “We had a wide range of participation last year. We had some stroller babies and then we had some seniors that came and ran as well.”

The race will begin and end at the Capital City Club in Brookhaven, following around the golf course. There will be pre-race stretching, music, coffee and hot chocolate, and children activities, like face painting, Holley added.

Registration is $25 for individuals, or $75 maximum per family, if participants sign up before Saturday. Afterwards, the price is $35 per person or $100 maximum per family.
