Woodward’s diving coach for the last 10 years came very close to her prediction when junior Lindsay Hornecker and sophomores Haley Hasen and Lee Ann Passarella qualified for A-AAAAA state finals after a first-place victory at the Panther/Wolfpack Invitational in Augusta on Jan.12.
“It was also my personal record and I was really excited about that,” said Hornecker, who will be making her third appearance at the finals. “I want to break the top-10 and see how good I can do.”
“I was so happy,” Hasen said.
Then on Jan. 16, junior diver James Williamson added his name to the list of state qualifiers following a 121-59 War Eagles’ victory over Lovett.
“I was thrilled,” said Williamson, who will be competing at Georgia Tech for the first time. “Qualifying was definitely one of my goals for this season. I knew it was going to be very hard. It took me a while but I was happy to be able do it.”
Passarella and Hasen will be making their second appearance in the finals.
“I was really excited because I was going with Lindsey, Haley and James,” Passarella said.
The girls’ swimming and diving team is currently 6-0 and has four first-place finishes.
“Lee Ann is a very confident and consistent diver,” Mygatt said. “Lindsay is very much the leader of the team. She is our captain. She fills that role beautifully. She encourages and sometimes she helps coach.”
Currently, the boys’ team is 5-1 and has two first-place finishes with the fearless Williamson leading the way.
“James will try anything even though he will give me a funny look,” Mygatt said.
“I love the thrill of falling through the air and being in the water,” Williamson said.
Both teams will face Westminster at home Tuesday. They will also compete this weekend in the Metro City Championship at Westminster before capping the season at Georgia Tech.
“I love my team,” Mygatt said. “They are a great group of kids. I could not be happier working with them. They work hard, support each other and get along well. It’s everything you could possibly want if you had to coach a sport.”
