The event, titled “Krewe of Thalia and Melpomene — A Mardi Gras Masked Ball,” will raise money for the local theater.
“Not all the funding for a theater comes from ticket sales,” said Michael Magursky, event chairman. “In fact, a majority of the funding comes from other sources. Stage Door is no exception. We have a really great subscriber base and wonderful responses to the shows, but we still have to raise a little more money on top of that to keep the theater going.”
The group has organized fundraisers for the past several years but wanted to try something new this year.
“We wanted to do some type of a signature event,” he explained. “We came across Mardi Gras as something that we don’t really see a lot of around Atlanta.”
Magursky said they intend to make the ball an annual fundraiser. This year’s event will be Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Perimeter on Chamblee Dunwoody Road.
The evening will start out with a cocktail hour in the hotel’s main atrium, complete with strolling entertainment and a silent auction. Guests will then move to the ballroom for a seated dinner, continued entertainment, a live band and dancing until midnight.
“I’m hoping it’s going to be something fun and different,” Magursky said. “Something unique.”
He explained the group created its own Mardi Gras krewe named after the Greek muses of comedy and tragedy — Thalia and Melpomene.
“All the big Mardi Gras krewes in New Orleans have names after Greek gods or muses and we thought that would be appropriate for a theatre group,” he added.
