“We are very excited about the program in Douglas County,” said Craft. “This offers a choice for our children.”
A musical ensemble from New Manchester High School performed several pieces throughout the event, led by Damien Gaiters, fine arts department chair and director of bands. Students performing were Ebony Antoine, Robby Gamble and Devin Witt.
Douglas County School Superintendent Gordon Pritz stressed to the gathering how important business community support is to the school system.
“We face many challenges in Douglas County schools,” he said. “We can’t do it without your help. You are so, so important.”
Mike Smith, manager at the Walmart on Thornton Road, shared why his company was a partner.
“This is all about time and giving,” he said.
“We encourage our associates to become mentors, and we encourage them to get involved with Job Shadow day,” Smith said, in reference to a program allowing students to follow workers.
He added, “It is not all about financials.”
Students, staff and community have been served by the Douglas County Partners in Education program for more than two decades, said Karen Stroud, school system community relations director.
“All Partners in Education relationships are individually designed to have a positive impact on student achievement and provide a hands-on opportunity for businesses and organizations to share their expertise, time, ideas and experience to enrich the students in the community,” said Stroud.
