In a news release Wednesday, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners announced it unanimously approved the appointment of Mary C. Cooney as the chair of the Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections. Cooney was nominated by District 2 at-large Commissioner Robb Pitts.

Cooney is an attorney in private practice in Atlanta who served as deputy city attorney for the city of Atlanta from 1988-98. She is currently the secretary of the Atlanta-Fulton County chapter League of Women Voters. She is also a member of the Emory University Public Interest Advisory Committee and the Georgia Fifth Congressional District Service Academy Selection Board.

Cooney is a graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and the Emory University School of Law. She is also a graduate of the Leadership Academy Class of 1988 and served as vice president of the Georgia League of Women Voters from 1995-97.

“With Ms. Cooney’s background, she is the ideal person to ensure that our election process is improved and that each voter’s vote will count,” Pitts said. “I believe the citizens of Fulton County will benefit from her leadership.”

In January the commissioners approved the appointment of Mary Norwood to the elections board. Norwood was nominated by the Fulton County Republican Party.
