Now is the time.

That is the message circulating around the Union Grove camp.

Five Wolverine wrestlers are charged with taking that mantra to heart — and the mat — as the GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Meet gets underway.

Here, the best of the best will decide who’s top dog in weight classes ranging from 106 to 285 pounds across all classifications under the bright lights of the Macon Centreplex.

Union Grove’s contingent is led by 126-pound Sectionals champ Griffin Higginbotham. Fellow seniors Kai Kizzie (152) and Tyler Cooley (195) also qualified for state, as did sophomores Luke Parker (138) and A.J. Spencer (182).

Heading into Thursday’s opening matches Wolverines coach Matt Ferrari chose to keep his approach in regards to preparation for his state-bound grapplers simple.

“At this point, there’s really no changing things up,” Ferrari said. “It’s more about managing their weight and keeping them healthy.”

Call it a case of Ferrari, in his first year at the helm, relying on his stable of studs to simply go out and execute.

“The work’s [already] been done when you’ve gotten to this point,” he added.

“The focus is match strategy — looking at the brackets match-by-match and figuring out what we need to do.”

In terms of style and strengths, each member of the Wolverines contingent is a “little different,” Ferrari noted.

Look for Higginbotham, who’s already won a state title during his career, to anchor the group — en route to possibly earning another spot in the finals.

He and his Union Grove teammates won’t be alone in representing Henry County in Macon.

Grapplers hailing from neighboring prep programs will also square off with their counterparts from around the Peach State. The GHSA state tourney is set to get down to business today and runs through Saturday.
