Despite a 9-16 record at the end of the regular season, the South Paulding girls’ basketball team closed out the season winning three of their last four games.

In light of these wins, head coach Kelly Nye-Hinkson said Katie Amritt is the most deserving of being recognized this week.

“She is most deserving at this time for her 110 percent effort in practice and at the games all the time. Katie also has been given the task of defending a few of the best players in our region in close ball games,” said Nye-Hinkson.

Amritt is a 5-foot-5 junior shooting guard for the Lady Spartans. She currently averages 10 points a night, along with two assists, two rebounds and two steals.

In her second season on varsity, Amritt is also a captain for this varsity team. As a captain for the team, Nye Hinkson said she “leads by example, on and off the court.”

Even though Amritt is a leader, Nye-Hinkson noted that she is a “quiet leader” and her teammates “feed off her energy,” rather than responding to her yelling.

Aside from being quiet, Nye-Hinkson described Amritt as being “very unselfish, coachable and hustles her tail off.”

“[She’s a] hustler on both ends of the court; very tenacious for a young guard and a go-getter. Katie wants to improve daily on her basketball skills and knowledge,” Nye-Hinkson said.

While Amritt is only a junior, Nye-Hinkson said she would like to play basketball at the collegiate level.
