Sandy Springs’ reading public will again join other cities across the nation in promoting literacy and building a sense of community by participating in Sandy Springs Reads’ “One City One Book” event.

“To Kill a Mockingbird,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee, has been selected for the 2013 Sandy Springs Reads book. Lee’s first and only novel captivated the American reading public as it dealt with racism, poverty, justice, and class. Fifty years later, it is one of the most revered novels in American literature and recognized by many as the best novel of the 20th century.

At the Feb. 5 Sandy Springs City Council meeting, Mayor Eva Galambos proclaimed the day Sandy Springs Reads Day in recognition of the program’s contribution to literacy promotion in the city. Sandy Springs Reads programs will take place during ArtSSpring, a month-long celebration of the arts, April 18 through May 17, sponsored by Art Sandy Springs.

The literary events culminate with the April 27 screening of the documentary, “Hey Boo!” at the Lefont Sandy Springs movie theatre. It tells the untold story of the novel and the Oscar-winning movie, which will be shown April 28, also at the theatre. Both events are at 10:30 a.m.

Sandy Springs Reads is a collaborative effort and partnership of the Sandy Springs Education Force, Friends of the Sandy Springs Library, the Sandy Springs Branch of the Atlanta-Fulton Library System and Art Sandy Springs.
