Sweetwater Creek State Park to host hayride, hikes

Upcoming events at Sweetwater Creek State Park in Lithia Springs include:

• Art in the Park Thursday, Feb. 14, and Monday, Feb. 18, 1 to 3 p.m. Bring canvas and paint, clay, camera, or oil pastels for exclusive access to the interior of the five-story New Manchester Mill ruins. This hike involves a moderate, mile-long (total) hike to the mill and back. Create artwork while enjoying beautiful views of the Sweetwater Creek rapids alongside the dramatic mill ruins. Reservations required at (770) 732-5871. Cost is $10 plus $5 parking.

• Historic New Manchester Mill Hike Saturday, Feb. 16 and 23, 1 to 2:30 p.m. This hike involves following Sweetwater Creek down to and going inside the historic five-story Civil War-era New Manchester Mill with a park ranger or historian. The Mill is situated alongside the rapids of Sweetwater Creek. This walking tour requires a moderate mile-long hike (total) down to the mill and back. Closed-toe, sturdy shoes are required. Meet at the Visitor’s Center. Cost is $5 plus $5 parking.

• “Wagging Trails” Evening Dog Hike Feb. 21, 5 to 6:30 p.m. This evening dog hike covers approximately two miles including walking alongside the rapids of Sweetwater Creek and going inside the five-story ruins of the Civil War-era New Manchester Mill. The law requires dogs to be “on leash” at all times. Meet at the Visitor’s Center. Closed-toe, sturdy shoes are required. Registration required at (770) 732-5871. Cost is $5 plus $5 parking.

• Hayride and S’mores Sunday, Feb. 17, 5 to 6:30 p.m. This tractor-pulled hayride travels along the park’s White Trail and up to Jack’s Hill. Participants also can gather around a campfire and make s’mores. Park rangers and local historians will be leading these programs, sharing history and stories from the park. Meet at the Visitor’s Center. Reservations are required at (770) 732-5871. Cost is $8 plus $5 parking.

• Candlelight Hike to the Mill Saturday, Feb. 16, 6 to 8 p.m., and March 16, 7 to 9 p.m. These mile-long guided night hikes are easy to moderately difficult and go inside the Civil War-era textile mill ruins of New Manchester. Candle lanterns will be provided. No children under 6 years or dogs permitted. Space is limited and is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Meet and register in the Visitor’s Center parking lot. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required. Cost is $5 plus $5 parking.

• “Snakes Alive!” Snake Awareness Program Feb. 23, 3 to 4 p.m. Join herpetologist Aly Lecznar for this hour with several live snakes where participants will learn about the natural history of snakes, understand their senses and behavior, identify venomous snakes of Georgia, and become familiar with some native snakes. Reservations recommended at (770) 732-5871. Cost is $5 plus $5 parking.

• “Ruins to Rapids” Full Moon Hike Feb. 23, 7 to 9 p.m. These 1.5-mile hikes are moderately difficult and go inside the Civil War-era textile mill ruins of New Manchester and follow the rapids of Sweetwater Creek. A flashlight and closed-toe, sturdy shoes are required. No children under 6 years or dogs. Meet inside the Visitor’s Center. Reservations recommended at (770) 732-5871. Cost is $6 plus $5 parking.
