Holy Innocents’ fell just short of a championship with a second-place finish in Class A at the GHSA state traditional wrestling tournament in Macon Saturday.

The Golden Bears scored 171 points to finish runner-up behind champion Gordon Lee (187) in the Class A team standings.

“Honestly, [finishing second] was not our goal, but it was a great tournament,” Holy Innocents’ coach Stacey Davis said. “The kids wrestled well. Overall, we had some great performances.”

Jason Grimes won his second consecutive individual state championship, winning the 182-pound weight class after claiming the 170-pound crown a year ago.

Brendan Quigley won the 132-pound title, while Grant Chastain clinched the 152-pound crown.

John Hiles (113) and Liam Quigley (145) were runners-up in their weight classes, while Rod Davis (170), Grant Gosden (195) and Owen Penn (138) finished third, Stephen Williams (160) placed fourth and Logan Chastain (120) was fifth.

Pace’s Jack Walsh was a fifth-place finisher at 220 pounds in Class A.

Lovett finished sixth in the AA competition, scoring 63 points. Jefferson (192) won the team title in that classification.

Kyler Allen (106), Corey Erdoes (182) and William Henagan (220) each finished runner-up in their weight classes for the Lions, with James Hite (120) placing fourth, Patrick Johnson (113) and Daniel Keough (160) fifth and Spencer Lee (138) sixth.

Westminster’s Alex Balser placed sixth at 106 in AA.

Woodward won the AAA championship in convincing fashion, scoring 138 points to runner-up Oconee County’s 101.

The War Eagles won three individual titles, with Chad Pyke winning at 160 pounds, Chandler Pyke at 132 and Evan Strawn at 145.

Michael Vickers was runner-up at 220 for Woodward, while Caleb Greer (138), Max Pastor (113) and Richard Wang (285) finished third, David Morgan (126) fourth, Ben Heiman (145) fifth and William Willsey (152) sixth.

Blessed Trinity’s Evan Strawn won the AAA state title at 145, with Daniel Fuller (113) placed fifth and Kyle Evans (138) sixth for the Titans.

St. Pius X’s Quinn Peragine was a third-place finisher at 120, while Dalton Scroggins placed fifth at 138 for the Golden Lions in AAA.

Marist placed fifth in AAAA. Kenneth Brinson won the title at 195, while Matt Andres (152) and Steven Wallace (285) were runners-up for the War Eagles.

Other state champions crowned were Archer (AAAAAA), Pope (AAAAA) and Gilmer (AAAA).
