Known as one of the best distance swimmers in the state, Alpharetta senior Cody Reul capped off his high school career in style at the GHSA state swim meet Feb. 9.

A Western Kentucky swimming signee and Alpharetta team captain, Reul knocked out 10 laps at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in a blistering four minutes, 26.93 seconds, claiming a Class AAAAAA state championship in the 500-yard freestyle.

“Prior to [the race] I believed Cody had the potential to bring home the medal, but he was the one who needed to believe he could, and get out there and win that race,” said Alpharetta swim coach Emily Santowski.

Off the blocks first, Reul never trailed in the race and eventually touched the wall .76 seconds faster than his closest competition.

“He makes the 500 look like a sprint when swimming it in 4:26. His ability to go out, go for it and be the one that everyone is chasing makes him an ideal swimmer for any event,” said the Alpharetta coach.

Reul, who trains year round with his club team (Swim Atlanta), also finished in the top six in three other events at the state meet — taking second in the 200 free (1:36.66) and helping his relay teams finish fifth in the 400 free (3:10.96) and sixth in the 200 IM (1:38.17).

In those four races Reul helped Alpharetta accrue 91 of their 148.5 points, leading them to a fifth place team finish in the process.
