This year though she pulled off a double, touching the wall first in both the 100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke at the Class AAAAAA state championships Feb. 9.
“She wasn’t seeded first but we knew her personal best times hadn’t been achieved in any Milton meet this year,” said Milton swim coach Teresa Lee of Grover’s performance at the GHSA state swim meet.
“We set goals for her to finish first in both races and hoped her hours in the water would help her [achieve] that goal.”
Her countless hours in the pool with Milton and her club team (Swim Atlanta) paid big dividends at Georgia Tech. Grover not only won both state titles, but dusted the field in each event — finishing the 100 back in 55.96 seconds (1.28 seconds clear of second place) and the 100-fly in 55.55 (1.79 seconds ahead of her closest competitor).
“Her success in the water is a direct result of those hours she spends training and preparing for these races,” said Lee.
“She is a very dedicated swimmer that sets high standards and will stop at nothing to achieve them.”
Grover’s two state titles run her career total to three. A year ago she took first place in the 100 freestyle and finished third in the 100 backstroke.
