Booth sales started on Feb. 11 and will be running until around mid-March, officials said. The Scouts use the sales to teach the girls different skills such as goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics, according to a news release from the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta.
“The activity of selling cookies is directly related to our purpose of helping all girls realize their full potential and become strong, confident and resourceful citizens,” according to the news release.
There are 690 scouts in 61 troops in Paulding County.
One of those troops, Troop 6083 based in Dallas, will be hosting booth sales every day until Feb. 28 at different locations, said Troop Leader JoAnn Huff, of Dallas.
“I have been selling, and been a leader, for 10 years,” Huff said.
Her troop has 12 girls, which presold 1,000 boxes of cookies, she said.
“We are hoping to sell 2,600 all together,” Huff said.
Pearl Huff, 12, daughter of JoAnn and Fred Huff, said she is planning on selling 750 boxes herself.
Huff’s girls are selling cookies to raise money for their Silver and Gold Awards, the troop leader said. All girls earning the award find an issue in the community and make a plan on how they can help, and then implement the plan.
“This is one of the biggest money makers for each troop,” Huff said
Their troop is planning on helping the Douglas County Animal Shelter, she said.
“I hope all the animals can find a nice, loving home,” Pearl said.
For residents who do not carry cash some troops now have portable credit and debit card readers, but the preferred method is still cash, according to the news release. Also for customers who have smart phones the organization now has a Cookie Locator application, and for those with internet access there is a locator at www.gsgatl.org. Both locators will show a schedule of where the girls will be selling boxes.
