Burnette submitted a voluntary letter of resignation, effective Feb. 11, according to Mount Vernon spokeswoman Allison Toler. He stepped down shortly after being arrested Jan. 29 in an east Cobb subdivision for allegedly exposing himself to an adult female.
“We have begun our search for his replacement and remain committed to selecting the best possible candidate to serve as Mount Vernon’s new football coach,” Toller wrote in an email.
Burnette, a former NFL linebacker who played in 1991 with Green Bay and the next two seasons with Tampa Bay, posted a 17-34 record in his five years at the Mount Vernon helm — including a 2-8 mark in 2012.
