Senior night ended perfectly for the Clayton State Lady Lakers.

Drameka Griggs scored 21 points and Auburn Randolph added 14 as Clayton State cruised to a 91-43 rout of Georgia Southwestern on Saturday, capping the regular season with a 14-0 record at Mason Barfield Court.

“It’s always good to win on senior night,” Clayton State women’s coach Dennis Cox said. “You always want to send your seniors out with a win.”

With another convincing home victory, the Lady Lakers improved to 25-0 overall this season and became the only women’s team in the nation with an unblemished record after Bentley lost to Stonehill on Saturday.

As expected, Clayton State got off to an excellent start due to their ability to expose the Lady Hurricanes’ weak transition defense, resulting in a 15-2 lead with 14:47 left in the first half.

The Lady Lakers would remain ahead by double digits the rest of the half and own a 43-17 halftime advantage, capped on a layup by Jessica Covington (10 points) before the buzzer.

In the second half, Clayton State shot 54 percent from the field en route to topping the 90-point mark for the second time this season, while holding Georgia Southwestern to 21 percent shooting.

“Our seniors are special and really huge and instrumental in our success this year,” Cox said. “The reason we are doing what we’re doing is because those kids came back with a resolve to get us back to the Elite Eight.”

After the Lady Lakers’ easy win, the men’s team made it a clean sweep with a 70-64 triumph over the Hurricanes in head coach Gordon Gibbons’ final home game. (Gibbons will resign at the end of the season after 12 seasons at the helm.)

“I won my first game here in overtime at Albany State and to win my last game at home is big,” Gibbons said. “It’s something I will always remember.”

Omari Murray scored 15 points, Sirdarius Henry had 13 and Charles Shedrick finished with 11 for Clayton State, which improved to 9-9 in the Peach Belt Conference and clinched a berth to the PBC tournament.

After falling behind by seven points early, the Lakers managed to enter the locker room with a 42-38 edge. In the second half, Clayton State quickly extended their margin to double digits and kept it there for much of the half until the Hurricanes narrowed the gap with a couple of minutes to go.

"This time of the year, good teams need to be playing well," Gibbons said. "I feel like we've had a really nice stretch now--won last six out of eight. this is as good as we've played tonight all around, rebounding, defense and timely offense. A good win for our team."

Clayton State will conclude the regular season this Saturday at Columbus State.
