Woodland’s Will Costlow practices in the gym at a recent practice due to inclement weather.
“Defensively and on the mound we played well. Blake Hall pitched five innings, struck out eight, walked one and had one earned run, then John Hood pitched an inning with one hit, one unearned run and one strikeout. Offensively, we got some timely hits,” said head coach Corey Gochee.
Before the season began, Gochee said the team focused more on the mental aspect of the game than they had in the past. He also said his current team has better chemistry than his previous teams, a fact that should make a positive difference throughout the season.
The Wildcats played in the Home Plate Bash in Peachtree City over the weekend as well, facing off against new opponents — Langston Hughes and Whitewater.
Prior to this tournament, Gochee said it would be a great opportunity for his players to experience something different for the season.
“We played in it last year for the first time. It’s different and a chance to get away to a different venue and see some different teams,” Gochee said.
The Wildcats went 1-1 in this tournament last year. As for this season, Gochee said he liked his team’s chances and the way they match up against their opponents.
“They’ll both be a good test for us since region play begins soon,” said Gochee.
Woodland defeated Langston Hughes 11-2 in game one, but fell 7-4 in game two against Whitewater, finishing 1-1 again.
This season the Wildcats will face off against teams they haven’t seen in a while such as Allatoona and others they’ve never seen at all, like New Manchester.
Gochee has eight seniors and named them all as being key to the team — second baseman Chris Cuzzort, first baseman Lance Glockner, pitcher Blake Hall, pitcher John Hood, outfielder and pitcher Gavin Livsey, shortstop Camden McGill, pitcher Luke Patterson and Tyler Stringer at third base, first base and pitcher.
Next week, March 2, Woodland will host Cass and Pepperell for their Military Appreciation Day.
