Alexander is currently the federal security director for the Transportation Security Administration, U.S. Department of Homeland Security at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. He has experience in law enforcement and is a clinical psychologist.
Prior to joining the security administration, Alexander served as deputy commissioner of the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services; chief of police in the Rochester Police Department, and several leadership roles at the University of Rochester Department of Psychiatry in New York.
He began his law enforcement career in 1977 and also served with the Miami-Dade Police Department. He was a law enforcement officer in Florida for 15 years. Alexander holds a doctoral degree in clinical psychology, a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy and a bachelor’s degree in sociology.
“Dr. Alexander’s unique blend of leadership in law enforcement and academic training and practice in clinical psychology will be valuable in addressing DeKalb’s public safety priorities,” said Ellis. “I am excited to have him in charge of protecting DeKalb’s citizens.”
The appointment of a new police chief tops off Ellis’ public safety priorities. The police chief will report directly to county CEO. Ellis is in the process of restructuring the public safety office. He will include the input of the chief operating officer and police chief to determine the new structure of public safety services.
“Public safety is a top priority for me,” said Ellis. “And at the end of the day, citizens look to their government to keep them safe. This arrangement reflects the importance of public safety in my administration.”
Additional changes include realignment of police precincts and hiring additional sworn officers.
Alexander will start work April 1 and have full command of the police department including 896 sworn officers and an additional 50 cadets currently in the police academy and an operating budget of more than $93 million.
